About De Groene Uilen-Moestasj
De Groene Uilen-Moestasj is THE student basketball association in Groningen. The merged association exists since 2018, but the history of the separate clubs goes back to 1957. De Groene Uilen-Moestasj stands for sportsmanship, fun activities and a lot of companionship. Our ten Men’s, and eight Ladies’ teams are active at almost all levels, from the lowest regional level until the national promotion division.
De Groene Uilen-Moestasj wants to offer everyone the right spot and level within the association. In order to do this, the club has to find the right balance between high-level basketball and recreational basketball. The character of a real ‘student’ association cannot be lost during this process, as it represents who we are, and therefore, we organize a lot of activities inside and outside the gym. This contributes to the association’s ambiance, which makes it more attractive to become one of our members and, for current members, to get involved in our activities. Involvement of our members is of great importance to De Groene Uilen-Moestasj.
De Groene Uilen was founded in 1957 after which it has been the largest student basketball association for a long time, with Moestasj at her side. Moestasj, back in the days the third team of the professional club Donar, split off in 1976 by which she became a real ‘student’ basketball association too. For years, the two clubs existed alongside each other, with joint activities every now and then. Moestasj always had a more international focus than the Owls, which sometimes caused continuity problems. From 2018 on, the two clubs are merged in a non-statutory way. This means, that the clubs are practically one, with the same activities, the same board, the same website – the same state of affairs, but that there are still two existing clubs towards the NBB, with two names in the competitions. So yes, it might be that you are playing in black during one season and in green during the next, but in fact, you are visiting the same socials and being a part of the same association. The reason behind this merger is solving continuity issues and at the same time, realizing our statutory goal; facilitating student basketball in Groningen as good as possible. Because of a joint, more efficient organization with a larger pool of members, teams can be classified by level even better and there will be more opportunities for growth (as there is simply more space) and fun activities.
